  4.   There     are    surprisingly    big
  5. similarities  between  Van Damme's and
  6. his      big      example,      Arnold
  7. Schwarzenegger's life story.  Like the
  8. austrian   body-builder,  the  belgian
  9. marshal arts champion left his country
  10. and  went to Los Angeles.  Both wanted
  11. to be a moviestar.
  12.   Mainly  language  problems  hindered
  13. Van Damme's movie career.  Nowadays he
  14. speaks   about  this  with  a  perfect
  15. English:   " Noone wanted to talk with
  16. me  as  I  didn't speak English.  I've
  17. knocked     on    every    producer's,
  18. director's  door, and they all asked :
  19. What  does  this  brusselian tough-guy
  20. wants?"
  21.   But   these  times  are  over.   The
  22. "austrian"  is on Hollywood's top, and
  23. the  "strong  brusselian"'s  way leads
  24. there,  too.   It  was a hard decision
  25. for  him  to  leave Belgium.  He was a
  26. marshal  arts  star  there with a high
  27. salary  -  he  became a little illegal
  28. noone  in  LA,  working  for  lots  of
  29. little  not-so-legal businesses, slept
  30. in cars.
  31.   He  spent  3 years there without any
  32. role.   During  these 3 years he was a
  33. chaffeur, a bouncer, everything but no
  34. actor.   But  on a nice day in 1986 he
  35. got  a  role in the movie 'Not Retreat
  36. No  Surrender'.  It wasn't a big role,
  37. but  big  enough  to get a pruducer's,
  38. Mark  DiSalle's  attention.   His fast
  39. movements  and  his  charm  caught the
  40. interest.   He says:  "To be a star in
  41. Hollywood  you have to be a sex-symbol
  42. besides your talent.
  43.   DiSalle   introduces  Van  Damme  to
  44. Menahem  Golan,  the  boss  of Cannon.
  45. Golam  liked  Damme's  high  kicks and
  46. gave  Bloodsport's  main  role to him.
  47. Golan   saw   that  this  won't  be  a
  48. blockbuster,   so  he  was  ready  for
  49. everything.   But  not for Bloodsport.
  50. After having seen the movie he shouted
  51. to  Van Damme:  " What's this???!!!  I
  52. won't give you no role in the future!!
  53. Get outta here!!"
  54.   In   fact,  the  first  version  was
  55. really   bad,   with   shit   cutting.
  56. Secretly   Van  Damme  took  home  the
  57. original  and  cut  it with pros, from
  58. his  own money.  After some months, he
  59. went   back  to  Golan,  offering  him
  60. Bloodsport  with  new  cut.   "I  have
  61. enough  problems  with  Chuck  Norris,
  62. Dolph  Lundgren  and Stallone!  Please
  63. leave  me!  Go back to Belgium!" - was
  64. the   answer.    It  seemed  that  Van
  65. Damme's career is over, but after some
  66. weeks,  Golan  changed  his  mind  and
  67. decided  to  release  the  film to get
  68. back  some  of  the  lost  money.  And
  69. then,  like  in  fairytales, the movie
  70. worth  5000  bucks/copy  in  the first
  71. weeks,  it  was sold in 150000 copies.
  72. Wuth  the  50 million $ income, it was
  73. Cannon's biggest ever hit.
  74.   And  since,  there  is  no stop.  In
  75. some   years  Van  Damme  has  made  6
  76. movies;each one was a blockbuster.  He
  77. has  played  a  kickbox  champ, cop in
  78. jail,  and  in  the underworld aswell.
  79. In  his  latest hit, Universal Soldier
  80. he    plays    a   specially   trained
  81. half-machine  guy,  who  suddenly gets
  82. back  into  a  human, and starts a war
  83. with  his  ex-captain who is played by
  84. Dolph  Lundgren.   The film was showed
  85. worldwide not so much time ago, but he
  86. is  making a newer one with screenplay
  87. by  Joe Esterhas (This dude made Basic
  88. Instinct's screenplay, too).
  89.   He  loves to make films in Hongkong,
  90. because:     "There    are   excellent
  91. fighters, who don't scream if his nose
  92. is really bleeding."
